    Are any of your districts doing large group vision and/or hearing screenings?  If yes, what grades?

    We screen hearing and vision for EC, 4K and Kdg

    We check vision only in 3rd, 5th and 7th

    Yes. Prevent Blindness Wisconsin says best practice is to screen students in KG and first grade then every other year. We do vision screenings for KG, 1st and 3rd grades, and hearing screenings for 1st grade only.

    We have resumed our population screenings this year. We screen our preschoolers for vision and hearing. Vision screening is done in grades 1, 3, 5, 7 and we are developing an option at the high school level. Anyone may be referred for a vision or hearing screening. We promote the Optometric Association's recommendation for kindergarten eye exams by an eye doctor as a baseline exam.

    Something new we did this year at school registration days was having our vision exam resources with us. It was great to provide parents the resource that fit their child's need at the time we talked about it.

    Lastly, we follow the Prevent Blindness Children's Vision Screening Protocol.  If you haven't taken that course, it is worth the time and $75.

    Remember the CDC/DHS public health workforce grant funding will pay for the Prevent Blindness vision screening training. It would be wonderful to have all Wisconsin school nurses to have had this standardized training at least once in their career.

    FYI - Prevent Blindness is doing an online certification this coming Tuesday, December 6th from 9-11am.  I am registering ��

    We have used the Lions Club in the past for elementary school screenings.  Our previous school nurse, who retired this past Spring, took over doing it during COVID and never brought the Lions back.  I am the lone nurse for our entire district (about 1300 4K-12), so I have invited the Lions back to resume screenings in January.  They're very much looking forward to returning, as well.
